    Drag Racing - SpeedWorld Motorplex - 12/30/06

For those who don't know, SpeedWorld Motorplex is a drag racing facility in the far north west valley.  They regularly have "run what you brung" events, where any joe schmoe who has a driver's license, $20, and a car that can pass a simple safety inspection, can race their car down a 1/4 mile strip.  At the end of each race, the driver gets a slip that tells them how fast they did it.

This is something I really like to do for fun, and to spectate, it's only $15.  I will be driving my 95 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo, and am hoping to get a time faster than 13.8 seconds, maybe faster than 13.7.  Feel free to come and cheer (or jeer) me on...or if you're crazy enough, race your own car.  The gates open at 7, and I plan to be there then.

     Here's a map: http://www.speedworldmotorplex.com/directions.htm

Re: Drag Racing - SpeedWorld Motorplex - 12/30/06

To make things a bit more interesting, I will be racing a friend...who will be driving this:

This would be a Dodge RAM SRT-10, the Viper-powered truck.  Yes, that's 500hp and I believe 500 ft/lbs. of torque. The numbers would make it more than a match for my paltry 300 hp and 223 ft/lbs. of torque...but it is a truck, and it's rather heavy.  Test results put it at an advertised speed close to that of what I expect from my Z...so it should make for an interesting race.

Re: Drag Racing - SpeedWorld Motorplex - 12/30/06

Are you sure your car only has 223 lb-ft of torque? I looked it up and it shows 307 for the turbo. For the NA car, it lists 223 horsepower. It's rather hefty though for a car that only hauls 2 people. 3554 lbs. That's 11.84 lbs/HP. Mine is about 11.2 lbs/HP, so it should be an interesting race. Of couse, after the race I can load my whole family, a set of racing tires, and a toolbox into the car and go home. Cool

Re: Drag Racing - SpeedWorld Motorplex - 12/30/06

we're both wrong, actually...it's 283.  I was wrong because I was looking too quickly, and I'm assuming you got the specs from autos.msn.com (which are frequently wrong on their specs).  I remembered it being less than 300...and having more torque than hp is not too common for such relatively low displacement (3.0 L V6).

You're right, it is a bit heavy.  In fact, it's about 300 lbs heavier than the NA version, the differences being turbos, intercoolers, HICAS (4 wheel steer), leather seats (driver's side is electric).  After that, its just an all around heavy engine.  People that are serious about making a Z fast usually start with an NA (I didn't know this), and convert it.  The HICAS doesn't do that much, I'll probably have it removed when it breaks (plus get lighter wheels, and race seats).  If one gets crazy with their weight reduction, one can drop over 700 lbs from a TT.  But you have no interior left at that point...and who would want to do that to such a beautiful car.

Yeah well...I average more than twice your MPG...and including stereo/maintenance/performance parts, it has cost me about 20k, so hah. Wink

Really looking forward to it now, I just hope there's no rain, and the sun shines that day (nobody likes a cold track).

We're going in the evening right? I have some get-together (that's what married people call parties now, get used to it) at 11 a.m.

Looks like Speedworld is getting a little more serious about their events, offering prizes and such.  I plan to be there at gate open, maybe stay till 10 or so.

Ooh ahh. A $200 prize for the smokey burnout contest. That would cover 70% of one tire for me. I think I'll pass.

come now Mark, you of all people should know you don't use your every day tires for a burnout.  You get a couple of steel rims, and a Discount Tire  2 for 1 special. Cool

I wonder if they have my bolt pattern? I don't think the spindles on my truck are that common.

Re: Drag Racing - SpeedWorld Motorplex - 12/30/06

It's a Chrysler product...I'd be pretty surprised if they deviated too far from their standards.  You wouldn't have to have the same width or height, just compensate with a different tire.  I'm sure you don't have a problem melting the tires with the stock width, but it would be even easier doing it with slimmer tires.  You'd just want to make sure you compensate with a good offset to clear those calipers (but considering it's the rear wheels, this too shouldn't be a problem).

Re: Drag Racing - SpeedWorld Motorplex - 12/30/06

I think the spindles and Brembo brakes are unique to the SRT-10. I'm sure I can find wheels with the right bolt pattern, probably not some old steel wheels though.

I thought this was interesting. Someone who owns both cars...

    300ZX and RAM SRT10

Re: Drag Racing - SpeedWorld Motorplex - 12/30/06

That's awesome...I can tell it's a TT, and by the wheels and spoiler, it's at least a 94.  I just hope it's not a 96 (20 hp less, ODB II, etc.)

The guy who owns it says it dynos @ 400 hp.

Re: Drag Racing - SpeedWorld Motorplex - 12/30/06

If that's 400 whp (which is really the only number you can get from dyno), that's really quite impressive, works out to be about 480 bhp.  Must have upgraded turbos, intercoolers, injectors, etc.
